Did you know that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a Freemason? What few people today associate with the composer played a significant role in his life: On December 14, 1784, the then 28-year-old joined the Viennese lodge “Zur Wohltätigkeit.” He composed music for Masonic ceremonies—including the famous “Masonic Funeral Music” —and his last major opera, *The Magic Flute* (1791), is also steeped in Masonic symbolism.
On Friday, October 9, this special connection will come to life at “Candlelight: Mozart vs. Beethoven .” By the light of thousands of candles, two of the greatest composers in music history will meet in the neoclassical halls of the Lodge House—in a place that is surprisingly linked to Mozart’s own biography.
A Building Steeped in History
That is precisely why the venue could hardly be more fitting: The Mozart Halls are located in the historic Lodge House on Moorweidenstraße, which is still used today by twelve Hamburg Masonic lodges. The history of Freemasonry in Hamburg dates back as far as the founding of the “St. Georg” Lodge in 1743.
Behind the understated façade lies an elegant setting that is still used today for special cultural events—and provides an extraordinary backdrop for classical concerts.

Why are the Mozart Halls in Hamburg so special?
Opened in 1909, the Mozart Halls are among Hamburg’s most impressive historic event venues. With their high ceilings, neoclassical architecture, and exceptional acoustics, they have been the setting for concerts, theater performances, and cultural events for over a century. Particularly impressive: The Large Mozart Hall can be connected to the Small Mozart Hall, providing space for events with up to 700 guests.
Why are the Mozart Halls actually called the Mozart Halls?
The halls are located in Hamburg’s historic Masonic Lodge. The name is particularly fitting because Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart himself was a Freemason and composed several works for Freemasonry.
Can you visit the Lodge House even without attending a concert?
The Lodge House is not a traditional museum. It is primarily an event venue and the headquarters of several Masonic lodges. However, the historic halls can be visited as part of events or select guided tours.
