On Saturday, July 4, starting at 3 p.m., the big Schlager caravan —featuring around 50 colorfully decorated trucks —will wind its way through the city, passing the Landungsbrücken, the Reeperbahn, and back to the Heiligengeistfeld. As early as Friday, July 3, you can get in the mood at the “Schlagermove in Concert Open Air” on the Heiligengeistfeld and experience the first live acts. Then on Saturday, the fun continues right away with the Truck Party, and in the evening—if you still have energy—head to the Aftermove Party at DOCKS on the Reeperbahn. Among the most popular open-air cinemas in Hamburg are the Zeise Open Air in the courtyard of Altona City Hall, the SchanzenKino in Schanzenpark, and the open-air cinema in Ahrensburg Castle Park, which also impresses with a diverse culinary selection.

Although Hamburg is located on the water, swimming in the city itself is rather limited. For a real beach trip where you can swim, however, you don’t have to travel far, as the surrounding states offer numerous hotspots right nearby. Pack your swim gear and head to Schleswig-Holstein—for example, to Eckernförde, Timmendorfer Strand, or “California” and “Brazil.”(We’re referring, of course, to the coastal stretches near Schönberg.) There, you’ll find fine white sand, clear water, and the classic Nordic beach chairs —just about 1.5 hours from Hamburg. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania also impresses with stunning coastal landscapes and fresh air, much like in the “green city by the sea, ” about 2 hours from the Hanseatic city.
