While many people nowadays indulge in electronic club music, they still exist – the real music lovers. Those who appreciate pure sound, honest jazz and the essence of handmade music. For precisely these people, the Hanseatic city, known for its cultural diversity and countless nightlife options, offers a place that literally sounds like authenticity: the Cotton Club. The legendary jazz club was founded in 1959 under the name “Vati’s Tube Jazzclub” before it was later given its iconic name. After several changes of location, it has had its permanent home on Grossneumarkt since 1971 – at Alter Steinweg 10.
We simply had to experience this authentic music venue for ourselves – and we were there for you.
On Friday, June 27, we visited the Cotton Club for the first time and left absolutely thrilled! As soon as you enter, you can feel this very special vibe: an original jazz cellar without modern frills, but full of classic elements. Dimmed lighting that shimmers in red-blue tones, walls full of iconic jazz portraits, a red leather couch – and a stage so close to the audience that you almost become part of the band. The atmosphere couldn’t be more authentic: intimate, warm and full of soul.
The focus here is on one thing – the music. Pure, powerful, infectious. Jazz in its most original form, which puts you in a good mood, makes you forget everything around you and takes you straight back to the golden era of the genre. From New Orleans jazz to Dixieland, swing, boogie and blues – classic jazz in all its facets unfolds here. So that you can also enjoy the whole culinary experience, there is a great bar service with first-class drinks and delicious food. Our personal setup: Espresso Martini, tarte flambée and the best jazz sounds – absolutely harmonious!
On this evening, Pat & The Gracenotes were on the program – with soul classics from the 60s, played with dedication and skill. From the voice to the instruments to the stage presence: everything was just right and created the perfect atmosphere. We left everyday life behind us for a few hours and immersed ourselves in the jazz of the great times – an experience that will stay with us. Because let’s be honest: who wants to do the same thing all the time? A bit of musical variety does us good – and reminds us where many modern sounds originated.
So if you want to do something that doesn’t sound run-of-the-mill, but offers real flair and history, then the Cotton Club Hamburg is the place for you. And the best thing? Admission is free every Wednesday! So if you just want to drop in – now you know. The club is open almost every day – only on Sundays the stage remains empty. On all other days, it reliably provides the finest jazz sounds and unforgettable evenings.
