High above Hamburg, a love story begins that continues in a dream world: Faris and Farasha meet at a high school graduation party on the TV tower. But that very same night, their story together comes to a tragic end. Farasha then returns to Faris in his dreams. In *Geister*, director Fatih Akin explores love, grief, and the question of where dreams and reality merge.
In the process, Hamburg itself becomes a central character. Cinematographer Frank Griebe captures the TV tower, the Elbe River, and other city landmarks in shimmering, surreal images. Critics also praise the chemistry between the two lead actors, Eren M. Güvercin and Mariam Dawoud. However, the intense emotions and lavish staging can at times border on kitsch; according to Programmkino, the actors keep the story grounded.
*Geister* opens in German theaters on November 5. The Zeise is hosting several events with guests around the film’s release: On Friday, November 6, at 7 p.m., Fatih Akin and artist Bea Davies will attend a special screening and the book launch for the graphic novel *Geister*. On Sunday, November 8, at 8 p.m., editor Andrew Bird and Nathalie David, who was responsible for the design of the intertitles, will be guests. On Monday, November 9, at 8 p.m., a special screening will follow with screenwriter Ruth Thoma.
Anyone who wants to hear more film music after seeing the movie can experience pieces from *Inception*, *Interstellar*, and *The Lion King* live at the candlelight tribute to Hans Zimmer. A string quartet will perform by candlelight at the Mozartsäle Hamburg. The concert dates run from November 7 through January 28.
