Immersive exhibitions here, immersive exhibitions there – the term has long been heard everywhere. And the Hanseatic city also has a considerable selection of these experiences to offer. Another immersive museum doesn’t sound like a sensation at first. But this time it’s different: Tokyo’s most famous art collective, which had already attracted 2.5 million visitors to its teamLab exhibitions by March 2024, is finally coming to us. Europe’s largest digital art museum is being built in none other than our Hanseatic city of Hamburg, where it will open its doors in 2026. With visionary projects such as the Westfield shopping center or prestigious awards for the airport as a digital pioneer, Hamburg is more innovative than almost any other European city and proves once again: the future lives here.

The UBS Digital Art Museum will open its doors in Hamburg’s most modern district, HafenCity, at the end of this year. As the name suggests, the museum is dedicated exclusively to digital and immersive art. Inspired by its role models in Tokyo and Shanghai, Europe’s largest museum for digital art is being created on an area of around 6,500 square meters and with ceiling heights of up to 12 meters. In the vibrant HafenCity, where the iconic Elbphilharmonie concert hall already dominates the cityscape, this new project sets another milestone: it strengthens Hamburg’s tourist attraction and increases urban vibrancy. Here, art and technology merge at the highest level.
What makes the whole thing so exciting? It’s not just projections on the walls – teamLab lets you immerse yourself in living, interactive worlds of art. Hanging lights turn into dense forests, flowers bloom and waterfalls rush – a completely new world that reacts to your movements. So you don’t just stroll through rooms and look at pretty projections, but become part of the exhibition yourself! There are no fixed paths or classic exhibition spaces here – you move freely through constantly changing works of art that dynamically adapt to you.
Especially in times of social media, such backdrops with countless photo motifs are a real highlight and crowd puller. No wonder people in Tokyo are so enthusiastic about it. The same wave of enthusiasm is expected in Hamburg soon. Advance tickets for Europe’s largest digital art museum are already available – you can get them here!
