“The body is the temple of the soul – why should we hide it?” As Mahatma Gandhi put it, nudity stands for the freedom to free the body from social constraints and clothing. Modern nudism emerged in Germany at the end of the 19th century as part of the lifestyle reform movement: a reaction to industrialization, urban stress and the confines of bourgeois conventions. People were looking for a more natural lifestyle with exercise, light, air and a healthy diet. Nudity was seen as particularly beneficial and the first “light baths” became popular in the Berlin area and on the Baltic Sea.
The term “naturism” was coined in the 20th century – not as a provocation, but as an expression of naturalness, equality and a conscious approach to one’s own body. In the GDR, nudism was widespread – for many, it was also a silent form of rebellion. Even though public nudity has become rarer today and there are fewer naturist places and beaches in and around the cities, Germany is still considered the center of the movement. Nudism is more than just a lifestyle – its health-promoting and social effects have been researched worldwide. We’ll show you what it can really do.
Better body image & more self-acceptance
Nudism means mental health and increased self-esteem. People who go naked more often develop a more realistic body image and realize that every body is different – and that’s normal. The staged beauty ideals from the internet and television are not the rule, but the exception. Nudism helps you to accept your own body and make a statement: I stand by myself – without filters, without masks. In naturism, neither status nor income count. In Adam and Eve costumes, people meet at eye level – respectfully, calmly and without social coverings.
Connection to nature & stress relief
Nudism means more than just doing without clothes – it is an expression of a deep connection to nature. When you show your naked body to the world, you come into direct contact with Mother Earth. You feel the wind, sun, water and soil directly on your skin – uncovered, intense, real. This direct connection to nature creates a space of peace and reflection. The noise of everyday life, consumer pressure and external stimuli fade into the background. Instead, you will find a powerful counterpoint in the greenery. This connection has a noticeable effect on your mental state: stress dissolves, the nervous system calms down and you find inner balance. Because since the beginning of life, the best medicine is – and remains – nature.
More joie de vivre & lightness
According to the study “The Naked Truth” in the Journal of Happiness Studies, people who regularly practise naturism are demonstrably happier and more content. This is not only due to increased body awareness and higher self-esteem – it is also this unique feeling of freedom that can never be experienced in clothes. Anyone who has ever swum naked in the sea or pool knows that it feels completely different – lighter, more immediate, more natural. And after a day of swimming? No piles of laundry, no tan lines, no annoying sticky textiles in the heat. Instead: sun on your skin, wind on your body – pure being. So: with all these advantages – how could naturism not make you happier?
Better hygiene & skin health
Quite apart from the fact that bikinis and swimsuits cause tan lines and heat up in the heat, they also get in the way of your skin. Without clothing , the skin can breathe freely. Textiles, on the other hand, often cause friction and accumulate moisture – ideal conditions for skin irritation, fungal infections or blemishes. Of course, you also sweat when you are naked, but sweat can evaporate immediately instead of collecting in layers of fabric. This has a cooling effect, prevents overheating and skin irritation and also prevents the unpleasant odors caused by sweaty clothing. Not wearing tight clothing also reduces the risk of pressure sores, rashes or ingrown hairs. In short: being naked is not only good for your head, but also for your skin.
Higher vitamin D production & strengthened immune system
Soaking up the sun in the nude gives your body the best possible chance to produce vitamin D and over a significantly larger area of skin. Vitamin D plays a central role in the immune system. In order to function optimally, the body needs enough of it. The “sun vitamin” strengthens the body’s defenses, reduces the risk of infections, chronic inflammation and even depressive moods. Of course, the same applies to naturism: yes to sunbathing – but please do so in moderation and with the right UV protection.
