Hardly any other city in Germany has as much to offer as Hamburg: from international art exhibitions and first-class gastronomy to concerts and parties – you can experience the best of the country here. But when all the hustle and bustle becomes too much, many Hamburg residents are drawn to Sylt. The island has long been more than just a vacation destination – it is an emotional extension of the city, a place to take a deep breath, switch off and let go.
Especially in summer, a short trip to Sylt is the ideal getaway – and nudists also get their money’s worth. Of course, the Hanseatic city also has its very own secret spot for nude bathing, but many people are drawn a little further afield for that real beach feeling. After all, nudism not only stands for freedom, but has been proven to promote body awareness, boost self-esteem – and even have a positive effect on health. Fortunately, you don’t have to do without it on Sylt either: Kampen is home to Buhne 16, one of the most famous and popular nudist beaches in the country, and now we want to tell you more about it!
What can you expect at Buhne 16?
Buhne 16 is located to the north of Kampen – a guarded section of beach with official areas for textile and nudist use. Nudism is not a “must” here, but part of a free lifestyle. With or without swimwear: Everyone lies here relaxed side by side. The combination of beautiful nature, iconic flair and relaxed atmosphere makes this place so special for naturists and free spirits. Nestled between dunes, with a view of the open North Sea, a small paradise unfolds here. Fine sand, clean water and endless horizons invite you to take a deep breath and let go. Due to its slightly secluded location, the beach not only exudes tranquillity, but also a certain exclusivity – without any ostentation.
What makes Buhne 16 special is its history. In the 1960s, the Behrens brothers surfed here – the origin of German surf culture. At the same time, the beach became a mythical meeting place for high society in the 70s and 80s. Celebrities such as Gunter Sachs, Brigitte Bardot and Thomas Gottschalk were among the guests. And yet Buhne 16 is never out of touch: It’s not a chic club, but a place for anyone looking for the original – nudity, naturalness and North German humor.
A colorful, cosmopolitan crowd gathers here – free of prejudice, free of etiquette. A beach for everyone who appreciates nature, down-to-earthness and freedom. History, cult, nonchalance and a luxury all of its own: barefoot, textile-free, unaffected. A place where the saying “less is more” is truly lived.
